AC passes anti COVID-19 discrimination ordinance

ANGELES CITY – The Angeles City Government, under the leadership of Mayor Carmelo ‘Pogi’ Lazatin, Jr., passed an ordinance penalizing those who would discriminate against individuals found positive for the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), under monitoring or investigation, and health care professionals and frontliners fighting the disease.

Lazatin, together with the City Council led by Vice Mayor Vicky Vega-Cabigting signed Ordinance No. 532, Series of 2020 (PO-121-04-20), also known as “Angeles City Anti Covid-19 Discrimination Ordinance of 2020.”

The ordinance, sponsored by Councilor Atty. Arvin Suller, prohibits any act that causes stigma, disgrace, shame, humiliation or discrimination against COVID-19 positive patients, persons under monitoring or investigation, health workers and frontliners.

Lazatin said any person caught violating the act will be dealt with accordingly.

He is also urging his constituents to stop the discrimination among people who were affected by the virus.

“In these trying times, families who are affected by this pandemic suffer severe anxiety and social humiliation, hence, it is the policy of the City Government of Angeles to act as parents patriae by showing compassion, empathy, and tolerance towards its affected constituents as this virus can inflict any person regardless of age, sex, or social standing,” the Ordinance states.
