EdPam in The Netherlands for the peace talks
Angeles City Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan travalled to The Netherlands with Labor Secretary and Philippine Peace Panel Chairman Silvestre Bello III for the revival of the peace talks with the National Democratic Front of the Philippines. This will be the 4th round of negotiations between the government and the rebels.
The talks, which was cancelled in early February this year, will focus on the bilateral ceasefire agreement and the continuation of the discussions on social and economic reforms.
"The quest for peace deserves all the chances we can give. Our people wants peace. Our country needs peace," Pamintuan said.
"I believe that the openness of the Philippine government under the leadership of President Rodrigo Duterte and that of the NDF to achieve peace can result to the end of hostilies. But this is a long process and we are asking our countrymen to support us in this quest for peace in our beloved land," Pamintuan added.
The NDF, the Communist Party of the Philippines and the New People's Army have been waging a guerilla war in the Philippine countrysides for almost 50 years, the longest-running insurgency in Asia. More or less 50,000 Filipinos have already died due to this armed conflict.
Pres Duterte directed panel chairman Bello to finalize a bilateral ceasefire agreement with the rebels.
“Isa lang ang marching order niya, ‘get me a ceasefire agreement,’” Bello told reporters in a Palace briefing on Friday.#
