LCP Statement of Solidarity with Marawi City and Support to President Rodrigo Roa Duterte's Declaration of Martial Law in Mindanao

May 26, 2017 - 03:33 pm

THE LEAGUE OF CITIES OF THE PHILIPPINES (LCP) expresses its solidarity with and support to the city government of Marawi as it battles - through the Armed Forces of the Philippines, the Philippine National Police and other government security forces - the cowardly attack of terrorist marauders identifying themselves as supporters of the dreaded Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

As we condemn in the strongest terms the dastardly act of this terrorist group, we also commit to initiate humanitarian actions to help ease and alleviate the condition of the people of Marawi affected by the attack, and call on all members of LCP to support these initiatives.

WE STRONGLY support, in this regard, the declaration of martial law in all of Mindanao by President Rodrigo R. Duterte not only to immediately quell the attack but to, once and for all, stem and root out the violence and rebellion that have debilitated and prevented the development of Mindanao.

We should not allow the problem to spill over to the other parts of the country, which is why we call for the vigilance of all local governments against the menace terrorism. What happened in Marawi CIty, which was almost simultaneous with the terror attack in Manchester, England, should rouse us to the fact that terror strikes without warning, and that terrorism can only be defeated by decisive and comprehensive action, as did President Duterte in declaring Martial Law in Mindanao.

All peace loving Filipinos should support the President's actions. Only through unity and collective resolve can we confront and defeat this menace. We likewise express confidence that our Armed Forces will abide by constitutional provisions against the abuse of the powers temporarily given to them.

Let us rally behind our President and our Armed Forces!
